In case you're being serious: no we can't. I've been part of a contracting company that game developers hire.
I've worked on several games where the contract was pulled, port was cancelled, or something else happend. I am not allowed to say I worked on those games, or even name them.
I've worked on games that were released. I am in the credits. I am not allowed to post that my employer worked on the games, that I worked on the games, or what my roles/responsibilities were for that game without explicit approval from the contracting company.
That’s correct and it’s been proven historically over and over again.
The people who argue against that just likely never worked in a team that had these really strong key players.
What I’ve found is that it’s amazing to work with people like that, but often they’re also the kinda people that by nature are unpredictable, unstable, can’t be controlled, etc.
And yet, they’re also the ones that immediately ‘get it’ and can elevate the rest of the team beyond what they’d normally be capable of.
Imagine Nintendo would’ve lost Miyamoto after he made Donkey Kong - does anybody really think they’d be the key player they are now?
What happened to the Bulls after Jordan left?
What happened to Apple after Jobs left - twice?
Even in gaming it’s been proven over and over again, plenty of teams lost their magic after their key players left.
Blizzard never recovered after Pardo and others left. BioWare after the doctors left, etc etc.
If you’re arguing that everyone can be replaced, it’s more likely that you’re not one of those key players and just aren’t someone who sees the big picture and your self-defense mechanism is kicking in.
@RandomSprint Do you need to return the keyboard once you're done? The asset has value. The mental space of not managing a subscription also has value.
It's not possible to insure against theft of speculative value, like an unreleased book or video game. Also, if you request someone keep their goods at a venue you control, you are responsible for preventing damage and theft of those goods.
I like gamescom. Please take this seriously.
@thomasmahler Lighting, both implementation and design, have way more to them than I first thought.
Same with player controllers. I had no idea the kinds of things developers do to make it "just work".
And also capturing and transforming sound. Audio guys are literal magicians.
