Why Red Bull has a 'degradation' issue

Red Bull found out the hard way in Hungary that its RB22 is susceptible to a bit of aerodynamic degradation, too, after Max Verstappen complained that its handling kept getting worse.

The root cause of his problem appears to be that the RB22 is very sensitive aerodynamically, so anything that affects how the airflow is manipulated around the car can have big consequences in terms of its balance and feel.

Verstappen - who of course went on to finish second - appeared to have picked up some damage through qualifying as part of the kerb abuse that is key to a quick lap around the Hungaroring, with those broken parts affecting the aero and putting the performance out of kilter.

While Red Bull was able to make repairs for the race that made things better, a more permanent solution is either to make parts strong so they do not break or to adjust the aerodynamic mapping so it's not so sensitive and can operate at its peak around a wider operating window.

One of those solutions is much easier than the other - but comes with a weight penalty.

🔴 Rumours recently circulated in the paddock that Red Bull wanted to buy out Max Verstappen's exit clause with a one-time payment. A figure of up to €9 million was mentioned. According to BILD, that's not true.

Instead, the team's management, including team principal Laurent Mekies and Oliver Mintzlaff, sporting director of the energy drink company, are planning a restructuring of Verstappen's contract. Instead of running until the end of 2028, the new contract would run until after the 2029 season, without the previously known release clause. To convince the Dutchman to accept the deal, his base salary (currently around €65 million per year) is to be increased, among other measures.

Max Verstappen and his management have had Red Bull's offer for several weeks. There has been no official response since then. Verstappen holds the upper hand and is under no time pressure. However, the two parties are in continuous communication. Both Red Bull and Verstappen's entourage are interested in continuing their collaboration.
