Vince has always been unorthodox in his exploration of sound and concepts. He’s a storyteller, one of the only ones from the blog era that I’m still excited by when it comes to new releases. Can’t wait for June and to see this IRL at All Points East. ✅
While inverted nationalism and distorted Americana (see SLAYYTER) is popular right now, the way Vince is leveraging the concept is apt and spot on for the political climate and tone. Kudos.
Now more than ever, we need more protest music and "Blackberry Marmalade" serves as political music. It illuminates the present and past and implicitly advocates for folks to wake up. Makes me curious to see what 'Cry Baby' at large hones in on and how it harnesses such topics
Like “Cracker jack the sound of soul, you’ll box me in and sell my sh*t” is clever, because it toys with the analogy of the cereal (and box) while divulging on years of exploitation of multiple American genres, while speaking to Black exceptionalism. Talk your sh*t
The more I listen to “BlackBerry Marmalade”, the more it hits for me, it's a real grower. Just clever puns, wordplay and overall delivery. Vince has always been a smart lyricist.
Been spinning this new Ama since it dropped, love this direction from her. Brent blends well with her runs and this feels right on time with his latest album too. A contemporary R&B voice once again leaning into the UK. Spot on.
So I kinda love that Denzel Curry’s bringing back posse cut culture with this Scythe project. Finally got a chance to tap into the singles and yeah I’m with it.
I love following different creative communities. The fashion girls and others BEEN talking about “innocuous” signs of the tide turning toward conservativism the last 2ish years through trends. Not just tradwives but also ‘clean girl’ aesthetic, ozempic & re-emphasis on thinness
I really can’t wait to see what indie filmmakers create during this time.
Without Hollywood.
Without superstars.
Without capital.
But WITH full creative control and WITH community.
Some news:
I’m launching a newsletter in the new year. ‘Offbeat’ will centre my thoughts on music and culture amongst other things. Sign up for updates around the first post. See you in 2023 🖊
