Integrated healthcare is key to improving #TB outcomes. When #TB services are better coordinated with other health services and delivered closer to communities, people are more likely to access the care they need.
At a satellite session hosted by @TBAC_sa and @ahfsouthafrica, speakers emphasised the need for stronger district-level integration, sustainable financing and community-led approaches to help close gaps in #TB care.

The introduction of Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention injection administered just twice a year, has the potential to transform the country's HIV response. But a breakthrough medicine alone will not end new HIV infections.
The real question is: Will it reach the people who need it most?
Join the RHAP for a thought-provoking webinar as we unpack what it will take to ensure Lenacapavir is more than just another medical innovation. Together, we'll explore whether South Africa's health system is ready to deliver equitable access, how rural communities can benefit, and why strengthening sexual and reproductive health services must go hand in hand with the rollout of new HIV prevention technologies.
This conversation will bring together experts to examine the opportunities, challenges and practical actions needed to ensure that no one is left behind.

As the #SATBConference2026 comes to an end, @twice_m5099, Policy and Advocacy Officer at @TBAC_sa, reflected on the people at the heart of the #TB response, reminding delegates that the fight against #TB extends far beyond conference discussions and into communities across the country.
“Beyond the presentations and discussions lies a painful reality: people in rural communities are still losing their lives to a preventable and treatable disease.”
She stressed that the voices of affected communities, rural healthcare workers and traditional leaders must remain at the centre of #TB policy, funding and action.
“Most importantly, I am attending this TB Conference for those most affected by TB—the families, friends and communities who carry the burden of this disease every day...Ending TB starts with listening to and investing in the people most affected by it.”

Nearly one in four girls in South Africa falls pregnant before the age of 20, with rural provinces like the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, and Mpumalanga carrying some of the highest adolescent pregnancy rates in the country.
Behind these statistics are deeper failures within the health system: contraceptive stockouts, limited reproductive health information, inaccessible services, and experiences of stigma and poor treatment at healthcare facilities. Many adolescent girls still do not know where to access sexual and reproductive healthcare, while others leave consultations without their questions being properly answered.
For many rural girls, healthcare services remain physically available but practically out of reach. #YouthMonth

In our nursing report, RHAP called for community service nurses to be strategically placed where they are needed most, particularly in underserved and rural communities facing severe staff shortages.
With many healthcare facilities struggling to cope with limited human resources, the report highlights the importance of using community service placements to strengthen frontline healthcare services, improve patient care, and reduce the burden on already overstretched healthcare workers.
The report further explores the ongoing challenges faced by nurses in rural areas, including inadequate staffing, poor working conditions, limited resources, burnout, and barriers to professional support and development.

Our State of TB in South Africa report shows that 60.7% of people tested for #TB between April 2025 and January 2026 were girls and women, while only 39.3% were boys and men. This means only 65 men were tested for every 100 women despite men having higher rates of #TB and mortality.
This highlights a major gender gap in #TB testing where the group most affected by the disease is still the least likely to access testing services.
Government must strengthen targeted #TB screening for men, expand community-based testing and ensure accessible, stigma-free health services that encourage early diagnosis and treatment.
