@PsyDocCindy Culturally relevant pedagogy- recognize knowledge in all forms and *TALK* to the students, let them tell you what constitutes background knowledge on a subject- what connections do they make/see with the target objectives. Value them.
This morning my school engaged in a phenomenal professional development on Critical Literacy
Any district that has adopted Into Reading (or any other curriculum found to be culturally destructive) PD on critical literacy is beyond imperative.
In all my years in a testing grade, I have yet to see a single test passage centering the language, culture or experiences of urban Black or Brown youth & their communities.
I can only assume this is by design.
@one_lison @ValentinaESL In a sense, ELA does- they’re acquiring a language of literature- IMO all teachers should be trained to teach/support SLA. Students already have language, it’s acquiring the specific use in that context with that instructor.

Stop telling educators to practice self-care. Instead, put forth energy to eliminate the systems, structures, and practices that require educators to need so much self-care in the first place.
