Top 10 FDI inflow African countries, billions, US:

Total FDI Top 10: $50.5 billion, 72.0% of total Africa FDI.

International investors are clearly indication their preferences by investing billions in countries with strong longterm growth prospects and scalability.

Interesting insight: Egypt and Ethiopia are the only two African countries consistently ranked in the Top 5 FDI destinations for 5 years in a row. They are also amongst the 5 largest economies in Africa and, after Nigeria, Ethiopia and Egypt are the 2nd and 3rd most populous countries on the continent. Big bets by international investors in the two most geopolitically, systemically and economically important anchor countries in Africa.

Ethiopia’s role is particularly interesting as the world’s 2nd fastest growing economy at 9.2% (IMF) and at the same time it’s the diplomatic capital of Africa as the headquarters of the African Union (AU). It’s like combining the roles of New York (financial capital) with Washington DC (political/diplomatic capital). Very few countries, even in the developed world, play such a dual role let alone an emerging economy like Ethiopia. Huge opportunities for the country to sustain its growth and influence.
