My kid just asked why we don't have a pool.
I said because we don't need a pool.
He said "Tommy's house has a pool."
Tommy's house has a lot of things. Tommy's dad is a surgeon.
I'm not getting into a "my dad versus Tommy's dad" economic comparison with a 10-year-old.
I said pools are expensive to maintain and we wouldn't use it enough to justify the cost.
He said "but we could use it every day in summer."
We wouldn't. We'd use it for two weeks, get bored, and then it would sit there costing money.
I've seen this play out with our neighbors. They put in a $60K pool. Used it constantly for one summer. Now it just exists.
But I can't explain this to a kid who just wants to swim.
So I said "maybe someday" which is parent code for "no but I don't want to argue about it."
He seemed satisfied with that answer.
I'm not getting a pool.
Took my kids to the Christmas market in Hamburg today
First thing I did was walk them around the perimeter
I explained each concrete barrier, each bollard and armed guard
My daughter asked why there are so many policemen at a Christmas market
"Honey, Germany is a welcoming country, and welcoming countries need protection from people they welcome"
She nodded and asked "but why the lights are so dark?"
I explained Christmas lights are reduced by 80% this year to hit EU carbon neutrality targets
"Daddy, but the tree is also very small, is there a bigger one somewhere?"
What an annoying kid. I remained calm though
"Baby, that's sustainable forestry. The tree is just the right size"
My wife said quietly that maybe we could visit a market in Switzerland next year
I clenched my fist and told her that Switzerland isn't in the EU, their lights are against the Paris Climate Agreement, and she should think before she speaks
I love my family but it’s not easy to stay composed when they try to ignore core European values
