The true abyss of judgment is not the call of conscience—which at its limit is precisely the realization that our powers of judgment are not humanly sufficient in themselves, spiraling out towards the place of divine decision—but rather the pretense of thought judging itself, of the mind holding itself to its own measure. This is the necessary curse of any morality, or any ethics, which does not leave room for true sanctity in the opening to the other, an opening that begins from receiving the human and ends in receiving the divine. In this way, true judgment is received rather than asserted, limited by the exigencies of a nomos perpetually beneath the finality of pneuma; the consequences of an action lay its truth bare before a hermeneutic court, which still decides boundaries in relative human expediency, as long as the judgment of absolute divine presence fails to arrive decisively as a gate to manifest grace.

Every act of human judgment ultimately tests itself on the rock of sanctifying openness, exposing its weakness the more it insists ultimately upon its own comfort above the challenge of charity. It is this weakness which is itself received in the openness of charity; the self-defensively belligerent on all sides are received by the saint as children lost in a vale of tears, the banished children of Eve. To be self-causing in thought, to be causa sui, is ultimately to loop back to a certain childishness which, while collectively irreducible, cannot close in upon itself without a fall into corruption; a sense for otherness preserves the child of God as a receiver of love, rather than an accuser of what is beyond comfort’s limit. In the form of the Trinity, otherness is recapitulated even in God’s self-reception; to be Trinitarian is to preserve a pneumatic and agapeic excess over nomos, because in this way God is shown to span the greatest of gaps (between Father and Son) through absolute divine love (the Spirit).

In God without Being, Jean-Luc Marion identifies the functional root of the prideful causa sui in the idolatrous over-extension of the concept, which finds its limit in self-measuring and self-limiting, according to capacious scope (the instrumental conceit of “intelligence”):

“The concept consigns to a sign what at first the mind grasps with it (concipere, capere); but such a grasp is measured not so much by the amplitude of the divine as by the scope of a capacitas”

The danger of the concept is thus that it finds its horizon in an abyss of judgment, filled out not by the arrival of transformative grace, but by the achievement of self-thinking, of competence. May we rediscover the concept as received?

Such conceptuality would then put thinking in its place under what Marion calls the “amplitude of the divine.” Every concept is an instrumental stumbling towards this divine amplitude, which is the only absolute pneumatic limit that could fill out the abyss of its judgment. Without this grace, as it travels all the way down to the most helpless and infantile, the other side of the concept remains a sacrifice to the crucifier: Christ as an “idiot,” as beneath the rigorism of the law.

The causa sui thus absolutely reifies the distance between legal-intellectual initiation and spiritual poverty—but is itself spiritually poor in its incapacity to bridge this distance.

As Heidegger puts it in Identity and Difference:

“Man can neither pray nor sacrifice to this god. Before the causa sui, man can neither fall to his knees in awe nor can he play music and dance before this god.

The god-less thinking which must abandon the god of philosophy, god as causa sui, is thus perhaps closer to the divine God. Here this means only: god-less thinking is more open to Him than onto-theo-logic would like to admit.”

@JonnyRoot_ There are a ton of examples to pull from but evangelical Christianity in America is resistant to plurality in many forms unlike other Christian traditions in the 2000+ years of existence.
