And the person whose food is on the table, and whose labor built the chair you're sitting in, and whose land the house stands on, they are watching you eat and listening to you explain that you bear no relationship to how any of this came to be.

The food is in your stomach.

The explanation is in your mouth.

Both are real.

The question is which one you are willing to examine.

There is a reason the "all humanity is a victim" framework is more popular in wealthy countries than in poor ones.

In wealthy countries, it offers something valuable: a way to feel politically conscious and globally aware while the fundamental relationship between your comfort and others' dispossession remains unexamined.

In poor countries, in the countries that received the bombs and the coups and the structural adjustment programs and the debt traps, the framework is less popular.

Not because people there are less sophisticated about class analysis.

Because the directionality is not abstract to them.

They know which way the money went.

They know which way the weapons came.

They know which passports required no visa and which ones were turned back at every border.

The "we are all victims" framework is, in practice, most comforting to the people who are least victimized by the arrangement it describes.

This is not a coincidence.

It is the framework doing its job.

This linguistic sleight of hand, converting a specific group of powerful Western states into "the international community" as if by consensus of the entire planet, is so normalized that serious journalists use it without irony in serious publications every day.

And the Indian reader, the Nigerian reader, the Vietnamese reader encounters this phrase and has two choices:

Accept the framing, in which case they have accepted their own exclusion from the category of "international."

Or reject it, in which case they are being unreasonable, parochial, nationalist, resistant to universal norms.

The language is a trap.

And it was built so carefully that most people walk into it before they notice it's there.

Your three peasants in 1500 is a genuinely elegant framing.

It is also doing something very specific that needs to be named.

It begins the story at a point before European colonialism restructured the global economy.

Which means it can then present the divergence that followed as something that emerged from within European society: from English ingenuity, from Protestant work ethic, from whatever cultural or institutional qualities you might want to attribute it to.

But here is what was happening to the Indian peasant between 1500 and 1750 while the Englishman was "pulling ahead":

The British East India Company was in the process of capturing the most sophisticated textile manufacturing economy in the world.

In 1750, India produced approximately 25% of global GDP.

Its textile industry was so advanced that British manufacturers lobbied Parliament to pass laws banning the import of Indian cloth because they could not compete with it.

Parliament passed those laws.

Then it went further.

It systematically deindustrialized India to turn it into a raw material supplier and a captive market for British manufactured goods.

The Indian peasant did not "fall behind" because the Englishman innovated faster.

The Indian peasant "fell behind" because the British Empire dismantled the industry above his head, extracted the surplus, and wrote the story afterward as a tale of two different levels of ingenuity.

Your starting point of 1500 is not neutral.

It is the last moment before the mechanism of divergence was switched on.
