A fitting and heartfelt piece by @haroldhongjukoh in memory of Anthony Lester. I was very lucky to have @Odysseus_Trust as a family friend and mentor, who supported my work on law enforcement. I’ll miss him. https://t.co/rSh8eFM7Bj
I have resigned from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. Recent political vetting and
exclusion of suitably qualified applicants to join means that the ACMD is losing its independence. A thread to explain follows…
@DannyTransform Good luck with your next move Danny. You inspired me to care about drug policy all those years ago. You should be really proud of everything you’ve achieved.
This letter is heart wrenching. It‘s a living embodiment of EU success. It achieved, sustained and is working to keep peace amongst all our nations. German leaders writing, thanking Britain for not giving up on them, and saying they will not give up on Britain either. Remarkable.
Means the possible end to mass kill of millions of young male animals. Good news tech.

@johnharris1969 But if your argument is about democratising space travel, then private investment driving innovation (SpaceX, Tesla) and bringing down costs in the long term for everyone is surely a good thing?
On planet Guardian, space travel was a bit like British Rail of old, with ‘modest’ chaps flying about in government rockets that were open to everyone. What a shame Elon Musk came along and spoiled it. Oh, apart from the reusable rockets and electric cars, which we quite like.
Latest from me: on the dereliction of the dream of space travel, and the new world of flights into the cosmos for the super-rich https://t.co/bkBQ3VbERb
@johnharris1969 If your argument is that space travel/exploration is an unaffordable indulgence given the problems we have on earth, then I respect that though I don’t believe it’s an either/or choice.
WATCH: It is normal to think differently about something we may have thought before. We all do it. It's part of being human. So don't let anyone tell you that we can't think again about Brexit. #PeoplesVote
Important choices to be made later this year about who will get access to cannabis on prescription in the UK, and for what conditions. Complete the #UPASurvey and help shape the decisions about to be taken by government, regulators and the medical profession.
1. A thread of pedantry on reading the letter to ACMD from @sajidjavid last thursday -
https://t.co/EdfWicQtlr
Firstly - it strikes me that the news headlines about 'Cannabis being available on the NHS' are misleading.
The upshot is that those who had hoped rescheduling would take place imminently are likely to be disappointed. Nothing much happens in Whitehall in August, so the earliest we can expect to see a Statutory Instrument is Sept. Not impossible that this will be pushed into 2019.
Top lines from the ACMD report on rescheduling medical cannabis:
- standardised medicinal products to be moved to Schedule 2, but NOT raw cannabis
- Patients are going to have to wait for their prescriptions until the DH / MHRA can define those products https://t.co/9G47vbgIvF
@AlexStevensKent Possibly - the currency of the MHRA is clinical trials after all. But the strong implication here and in Sally Davies' report is that rescheduling is to take place on the basis of 'good enough' evidence, without waiting years for the gold standard.

Politicians come and go but the problems they have created for people remain. I can only regret that the idea of #Brexit has not left with Davis and Johnson. But...who knows?
Brilliant podcast with @dfjsteve - worth a listen in full, but this section on why we're all going to be eating artificial meat - and looking back in disbelief at current factory farming practices - is superb. https://t.co/7yMCu6jbTK
