Against the backdrop of large-scale assessments like PISA which fosters intense international competition, the main aim of education in the 21st century is focused on building human capital. So, in essence, education is primarily viewed as a vehicle for economic success.

@teachertiong So, one argument that I have come across is PISA is a very reductionist way to benchmark education. For example, Singapore has a very rigorous edu sys but because of this, the edu sys fosters a culture of no risk-taking. Resulting in lack of entrepreneurs and innovation.

@teachertiong Initially, I had the same thought too, like rich countries tend to do better at PISA, but then there is the 'Vietnam effect' which proves otherwise. Also, Scandinavian countries and developed countries have been fairly consistent in the test.

@teachertiong Hi Derk! The claim that success in PISA is correlated with economic growth can be traced to a research by Hanushek and Woessman (2015).

Compared to our average scores in 2009 and 2012, Malaysia's performance has improved in maths and science, but not in reading.
