BREAKING: Nigeria wins arbitration case against Sunrise Power as the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris, France, rules in favour of Nigeria in the $2.35 billion award sought by Sunrise Power over the Mambilla hydropower project.

The tribunal also directed Sunrise and its promoter to refund Nigeria’s legal fees of $11.8 million.

Sunrise Power had claimed to have been awarded a $6 billion contract to build, operate, and transfer the power plant by the Obasanjo administration in May 2003.

The company alleged a breach of contract by the federal government and was seeking monetary compensation of $2.35 billion from the Nigerian government to cover what it had spent on financial and legal consultants.

In the decision signed by the three panellists, the tribunal dismissed Sunrise’s claim for a declaration that Nigeria breached its contractual obligations under the settlement agreement and the addendum.

It also rejected Sunrise’s claim for an order that Nigeria should pay the company $400 million in satisfaction of the settlement sum of $200 million and the default sum of $200 million.

They further declared that Leno Adesanya, the promoter of Sunrise, is bound by the arbitration agreement with Nigeria pursuant to the settlement agreement and the addendum, and that the tribunal has jurisdiction over Nigeria’s counterclaim against him and his firm.

Former Presidents Obasanjo and Buhari had previously testified at the ICC in January 2025, maintaining their stand that no contract was signed in the first instance.

Nigeria was represented by a team of lawyers led by Elizabeth Oger-Gross and Tolu Obamuroh, now of Paul Hastings LLP.

With Nigeria's victory at the ICC, the country is no longer at risk of paying $2.35 billion to Sunrise Power as compensation.

PETER OBI EXPOSED - THE LIAR OF SATANIC DIMENSION

Peter Obi has spent a decade speaking. The books of Anambra State now speak back.

Lacking concrete achievements or a lasting legacy, Peter Obi has built his political persona on a self-manufactured myth of financial prudence. He routinely claims to have left Anambra State debt-free with a portfolio of lucrative investments - a narrative built entirely on revisionist history.

​Successive Anambra State administrations, beginning with Obi’s own chosen successor, Willie Obiano, have repeatedly debunked these claims. The state government confirmed that Obi’s celebrated investments decayed into near-worthless assets, while his real legacy was a trail of unproductive debts that canceled out any alleged savings.

The Breakdown:

Over eight years, Peter Obi's administration spent roughly $4.05 billion - about ₦5.4 trillion at today's official exchange rate.

Against that, he contracted external debt of $123.7 million, borrowed not for roads, not for hospitals, not for schools that would bear his name, but unproductive ventures.

An immense liability the good people of Anambra State have since been laboring to repay, being tormented by the reckless and unproductive debt incurred by their Debtor-General predecessor.

And what did Peter borrow for?

• Malaria Control Booster Project - $9.4M

• Third National FADAMA Development Project - $7.1M

• Health System Development Project II - $4.1M

• Malaria Control Booster Project (Add.Fin) - $4.4M

• State Education Programme Investment Project - $48.3M

• Community and Social Development Project - $4.8M

• Nigeria Erosion Watershed Mgt Project - $37.8M

• Value Chain Development Project - $7.5M

Total External Debt - $123.7M

Despite these substantial borrowings, the state's critical infrastructure and public sector suffered severe neglect:

● Unpaid Salaries & Pensions: State and local government employees, including teachers, were left with up to 11 months of unpaid salary arrears. The clearing of this backlogged ₦22 billion liability fell on subsequent administrations.

● Water Corporation Neglect: Former staff of the state Water Corporation went unpaid throughout his administration. Settlement agreements and installment payments for surviving workers had to be structured years later.

● Educational Deficits: 44% of communities in Anambra, which makes 78 of 179 still had no public primary schools. And this explains why Peter Obi's own daughter had to relocate to Lagos to find a suitable school to be employed as a teacher, because her father built no school suitable enough to accommodate her employment demands.

● Healthcare Collapse: Only 27% of Anambra residents utilized public health facilities due to dilapidated infrastructure and lack of equipment, forcing citizens to seek medical care in neighboring states and especially far away Lagos for their medical demands.

Peter claimed provided there are no mass deaths, Anambra does not deserve adequate healthcare.

● Fabricated Savings: The widely circulated claim of ₦75 billion left in savings and investments remains a narrative unsupported by the state's actual financial records, at best, a result of Peter's vivid inagination.

The Question

If eight years of "prudence" could not build a single school in nearly half the state's communities, could not keep a water corporation's staff paid, could not keep teachers' salaries current - what, exactly, was being saved, and for whom?

Ask yourself: is this the model of governance you want extended to the rest of Nigeria?
