To be sure there are continual threats to donor privacy. Governments come up with new and exciting ways to justify gathering lists. The fight continues. But AFPF v. Bonta gave us the precedent to fight back. Three cheers for donor privacy!

But the Civil Rights cases impact began to wane in the name of campaign finance regulation, charities regulation, and other ostensive government interests. AFPF v. Bonta helped turn that tide and reaffirm that the default is privacy, not disclosure.
