For record the change in tactics: the scammers decided to contain the bots and try to imitate natural engagement.

P1 shows data recorded 6 hours after publication. Well, overall, everything looks adequate. There would be nothing to find fault with here if we didn’t know that almost the same or higher engagement was previously observed in 3 hours (P2). I don’t know, maybe they think that if they try to imitate natural engagement, then all the previous data on aggressive cheating will simply turn into a pumpkin. But I wouldn’t talk about it if everything was so simple.

On P3, the data was recorded 10 hours after publication, this is midnight Pacific time (this is important!). Everything is fine here too. But on P4, the data was recorded 19 hours after publication, that is, at 9 am in the same time zone. Here we see an increase in likes by +10,000, which is absolutely not consistent with the natural user engagement and rather indicates a delayed boost. The fact is that night (and for their relevant audience it is night), especially on a weekday, is not a peak time for such engagement. Moreover, another post was published at the same time, and normally users tend to react to new content, rather than return en masse to the old one.

Such a change in the speed and nature of engagement indicates a manual adjustment of the content promotion strategy after its exposure. This confirms that the activity of boosting comments and simulating activity was conscious and purposeful. Thus, the change in behavior itself is additional evidence of the presence of centralized coordination and control over the stolen account.
