UN Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan released its findings on Wednesday, concluding that the RSF’s systematic campaign of violence against civilians during and after its siege of the capital of North Darfur state amounted to genocide, building on a February report that had already identified hallmarks of the crime.

The findings match those of Amnesty's report launched 10 days ago. We also believe that acts documented in our report, as well as other suspected crimes under parallel investigation, may be relevant to the crime of genocide. Its investigation into this conduct is ongoing at the time of publication.

During the launch of the UN report, survivors in el-Fasher described being raped in rooms where bodies of recently killed ‌civilians, including their own family members, were still lying on the ground.

These findings also match @amnesty report: we found that the RSF raped and committed other forms of sexual violence on a massive scale across many settings. Amnesty International interviewed 26 survivors of sexual violence, including 20 female survivors of rape, among them three girls under the age of 18 and one young woman raped when she was 17. Survivors described being subjected to severe humiliation and abuse that left lasting physical and psychological harm.

We called on to the UNSG Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict to prioritize Sudan as a situation of urgent concern by intensifying high-level engagement to secure time-bound commitments to prevent and end conflict-related sexual violence; strengthen monitoring and public reporting; and advocate for survivor-centred services and accountability in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

We called on governments to support and fund comprehensive, survivor-centred assistance for survivors of sexual violence, including comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare, clinical management of rape, psycho-social support, safe shelter and livelihood support. International partners should also fund efforts to combat stigma and provide flexible support to survivor-led groups and local women’s organizations working directly with survivors.

The organization is now calling for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, and for the urgent deployment of an international force to protect civilians:

There was once a lake in California so large that steamships crossed it, carrying freight most of the way from Bakersfield to San Francisco. Almost nobody alive has seen it, because farming drank it dry.

Tulare Lake, in the southern San Joaquin Valley, was the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, over a hundred miles long and thirty across. For thousands of years it fed one of the densest Native American populations north of Mexico, the Tachi Yokut, who called it Pa'ashi.

In the late 1800s, California handed out a simple bargain to settlers: drain the wetland, claim the land. So they diverted the four rivers that fed the lake, ran the water off into a lattice of irrigation canals, and by around 1890 the largest lake in the American West had been erased from the map and turned into cotton, tomato and pistachio fields. The tribe was pushed off.

The land remembers, though. In 1938, 1969, 1983, 1997 and again spectacularly in 2023, wet winters overwhelmed the canals and the water flowed back down into the old basin, refilling tens of thousands of acres of farmland and drowning roads and homes. They call it the ghost lake, or the lake that will not die.

The cotton, the pistachios, the tomatoes off that ground are grown on the drained bed of the greatest lake in the West, a lake so thoroughly deleted that most people never learn it existed.

They killed a body of water you could sail across, to grow row crops on its grave, and it still tries to come home.

Why did we have this war with Iran? This had nothing to do with American security. It had everything to do with Israel, with oil, and with the direction of Europe, because Europe is a complete mess. Do the people want the Epstein crowd, with their child molestation, running the country? Of course not. But what did we do about it? Well, we were too busy fighting each other. We’ve got to take the power away from the central bankers. If we don’t do that, it doesn’t matter if you’re left, right, center, or upside down—you’re not going to do something effective to prevent a tragedy.

Irwin Cotler is a stain on Canada. Leftists who have promoted this supremacist fraud should apologize to Palestinians.

On the front of Thursday’s National Post the former Liberal minister took his anti-Palestinian hate to a new low. In “The truth about Nakba: Propagandizing the antisemitism agenda in Canada”, Cotler wrote that the tiny “Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present” exhibit at the Canadian human rights museum ignored how the “Jews also suffered a ‘Nakba’”. According to Cotler and former Conservative minister Joe Oliver, the ethnic cleansing of Palestine was in fact a story of Jewish suffering.

Two weeks ago Cotler also co-authored a Globe and Mail commentary labelling a museum exhibit he hadn’t seen “propaganda masquerading as scholarship”.

Cotler is a raving Jewish supremacist who supports spilling ever more Palestinian, Lebanese and Iranian blood. He has promoted aggression against Iran and criticized Canada joining 155 countries that have recognized Palestine. Cotler has attended multiple rallies supporting Israel’s genocide in Gaza and written in defence of its policies.

Previously Cotler pressured the International Criminal Court to ignore Israeli war crimes and opposed the International Court of Justice advising member states on their responsibility vis a vis Israel’s illegal occupation. He’s also pushed Ottawa to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem while attending events put on by the racist Jewish National Fund and meeting with far-right colonists seeking to cleanse occupied East Jerusalem of Palestinians.

In one sense Cotler is little more than your run of the mill politically connected Jewish supremacist. But in another way, he’s far more despicable. More than any other, Cotler goes to great lengths to mask his Jewish supremacy with human rights language and work. He set up the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights and falsely claimed to have been Nelson Mandela’s lawyer. Cotler has become a saintly figure in the establishment by expressing moral outrage at official enemies while endorsing or ignoring international abuses by the US and Canada.

Despite a half century of aggressive support for Israeli apartheid, genocide and war crimes, Cotler’s liberal imperialist ‘human rights’ schtick has traction with the establishment left. In November 2024 the House of Commons unanimously praised Cotler’s “contribution to the defence of human rights”. At the time pro-Palestinian NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice told CBC Cotler was a “remarkable” individual.

In recent years NDP foreign affairs critic Heather McPherson has done a half dozen events, including on June 11, 2025, with the leading apartheid and genocide apologist. In November 2022 McPherson and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh met with Cotler, capitalist Bill Browder and others. At that time McPherson wrote, “this afternoon, Professor Irwin Cotler and I spoke about how we can work together to protect human rights in Canada and around the world. I am grateful to him for sharing his wisdom with me.”

Previous NDP foreign affairs critics Hélène Laverdière and Guy Caron regularly attended events or initiatives led by Cotler. So did former NDP MPs Murray Rankin and Randall Garrisson.

Green Party leader Elizabeth May attended many press conferences organized by Cotler. May was part of the Cotler-led Raoul Wallenberg All-Party Parliamentary Caucus for Human Rights and has repeatedly praised him.

Everyone can make mistakes, but to regain credibility, leftists who have lauded and worked with Cotler should be pressed to publicly denounce his genocidal Jewish supremacy. Truth and reconciliation with millions of Palestinian victims requires it.
