Not really. Not without destroying it or trusting somebody.

To confirm a bar is what it claims to be, you need one of these:

• Drill it and assay the core
• X-ray fluorescence, which reads the surface and misses a tungsten center
• Ultrasound, which needs a trained operator and clean geometry
• Specific gravity testing, which the right alloy blend defeats
• Or you take the vault's word for it

That last one is what nearly everyone actually does.

Tungsten-cored fakes have turned up in Manhattan's diamond district carrying legitimate refiner stamps. They passed the visual check. They passed the weight check.

Verifying Bitcoin costs nothing and takes seconds. Every node checks every rule on every block. No assayer, no lab, no trust.

Honest question: Why do dems have so much blind faith in government being purely good (if dems are in power)? Regardless of party the adage remains true “power corrupts.” The founding fathers were keenly aware of this law of humanity.
