Cal Newport autonomy traps get me on the reg:
"By some estimates, knowledge workers in North America outnumber manual workers by close to four to one—and yet, as Drucker wrote, 'Work on the productivity of the knowledge worker has barely begun.'"

Always loved these guidelines for the clarity of points like: "Give all touchscreen controls and interactive elements a hit target that measures at least 44x44 pt"
📣 Brand new Apple Human Interface Guidelines! 📣
That’s right, we’ve completely redesigned the HIG to be more cross-platform, easier to search, and completely reorganized from high level design principles down to low-level component guidance.🧵

My computer : normal
My internet: kinda shit
Modern distributed servers: much good
Groking: Let speedy distributed servers fetch user-specific content + assemble the HTML—then pop that over the wire to the client.

Didn't know if "o11y" was going to see the light of day #shred
A smart, strategic addition to a big platform that will benefit from a few more clear onramps.
Elixir + GraphQL backend, React + TypeScript frontend. I helped make some buttons, ha!
From 0 to #o11y.

A little window into how I spend my days at @newrelic
🔥at the end is just the @d3js_org and @FormidableLabs examples, but I like an alt history where penguin-bill length + wind speeds affect my portfolio site’s load performance 🐧

"Wouldn’t it be funny, though, if the Great American Novel actually does exist, only it’s not a novel and has been quietly appearing in serialized form on public television for the past 50 years?"
Stellar read + renewed ❤️ for @Kanopy

@elibelly Joined DevEx at New Relic in October. Loving this thread, super interesting. I find we need to get real empathy minded about a surprisingly broad spectrum of folks writing code and the systems they need to make sense of. Then creative hats to make work pain📉and work joy📈
Great convo on low-code!
- Historical perspective: for decades business critical software has lived in Excel spreadsheets that only one person understands #jobsecurity
- Tendency to overlook abstraction and version control in low code = major liability

Big time thanks to my colleagues from Deloitte! Grateful for lots in this past year! 🙌
Clearly identified a weak spot in the "jumping for a team photo" skill set. But with my new found faith in continuous improvement, I'm sure to overcome
Super useful DevOps posts from @googlecloud
👀 if you stumble w/terms like metrics/logs/traces, instrumentation, whitebox vs blackbox (#TIL)
Fav tip: “Monitoring and observability needs to be built into the baseline knowledge of all your developers.”

First (non-docs) #opensource PRs went through today! 🎉
Etiquette question: Is it rude to open a PR with a bug fix w/o first raising the issue and coordinating on the fix with the maintainers?
@patrick91 ? @nurodev ?
Nice to hear some new ideas unpacked:
Think of open-tracing or observability as a distinct domain that: "helps us understand how a given business event has been realized through a series of activities that spread across our distributed architecture"

After my discussions with VP Pence and others, the federal government has agreed to withdraw federal officers from Portland. They have acted as an occupying force & brought violence. Starting tomorrow, all Customs and Border Protection & ICE officers will leave downtown Portland.
