This happens because India has 157 GW of solar panels pushing cheap electricity onto grid at midday but producing nothing after sunset. Every evening, grid operators ramp up coal and gas plants by 74 GW to fill that gap, double what they needed in 2023.

That 9x price gap puts a number on how badly India needs batteries, just think about it :)

India threw away 24 GWh of solar electricity every day in May 2026 because grid could not absorb it. That wasted power equals more than quarter of Delhi daily consumption.

EAC-PM report says to smooth just half the evening demand spike, India needs 130 GWh of battery discharge between 1 PM and 8 PM. Entire storage fleet managed only 23.8 GWh per day. National plan aimed for 8.68 GW of grid batteries by 2027 but only 2.7 GW works today.

California faced same problem India has now, too much solar at midday, steep demand jump when sun goes down. California fixed it with batteries. State went from 0.2 GW of battery storage in 2018 to over 17 GW today.

On March 29, 2026, its batteries pushed over 12 GW into grid during evening peak, cutting the gap between solar hours and night hours from 28 GW to 10 GW. India evening demand swing is 5x larger but its battery capacity is a tiny fraction of that. The fix is known.

This is why Suzlon energy got new contract & Focus on battery material space that will be big space in next 5 year :)
