As an Athletic Director, I remind our coaches that it is easy to coach the highly motivated athlete. Great coaches find ways to inspire the ones who are harder to motivate because championships are often won by the athletes in the middle of the roster, not just the stars.
If you only invest in the athletes who make coaching easy, your program will never reach its full potential. Every athlete deserves your best, and every athlete can make your team better.
Last year, Microsoft made $101 billion in profits, got a $12.5 billion tax break from Trump & paid its CEO $96 million.
This year, it’s raising the price of an Xbox by $150 & eliminating 3,200 jobs.
Please don’t tell me corporate tax breaks create jobs. It never trickles down.
As an AD, here’s a reminder for parents:
Competition is hard. Winning is hard. Losing is hard. Being coached is hard. Accountability is hard.
Competitive sports were never meant to be comfortable.
If you don’t want your child to face hard things, don’t sign them up for competitive athletics.
The struggle is the lesson. The adversity is the teacher. The hard is the point.
PASTOR LORAN LIVINGSTON (@CentralChurchNC): “There has never been a Christian nation, and never will be. You don’t live in one now. A Christian nation wouldn’t have killed and displaced 20 million Native Americans, or thought owning slaves was pleasing to God.”
Pat Summitt didn’t teach people to be okay with losing.
She taught them to own it, learn from it, and come back better.
Losing should bother you...but it shouldn’t break you. Let it sharpen you.
That mindset still applies today.
What’s one loss that made you better?
You don't need the tallest players to win high school basketball games.
You need:
- Guards who defend like their future depends on it,
- A big who fights for every rebound,
- And a team that would rather make a great pass than take a *good* shot.
Effort always wins.
KABC Cardinal Classic - Summer ball is a missed bag because coaches are experimenting with lineups, some players will be missing and the main priority is team improvement and not necessarily the score. I did not see every player and will only mention the ones I have viewed.
Bella Swisshelm -6-0 2029 West Clermont OH Legends U - Attacks off dribble, downtown range on jump shot, rebounds, runs the floor, frequently gets to the free throw line, defends, high BBIQ, one of the best long range bombers I have viewed over the years, with parking lot range.
Sometimes the best leadership lessons come from the simplest words.
“My fault. Thank you. I’m sorry.”
Coach Pat had a way of making responsibility clear without making it complicated. Own your part. Learn from it. Keep moving forward.
That is a mindset we can all carry into today.
