Which deed of Abu al-Darda was the best?

She said: His long contemplation.

He ﷺ said: “They are your brothers and from your race, worshipping at night as you do, but when they are alone, they engage in sins, crossing the limits of Allah.”

Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

“Anyone whose soul inclined towards a sin and then he despises it, denies himself (that sin) and leaves it for (the sake of) Allāh, he is increased in uprightness, righteousness and taqwā.”

· Reminding oneself Allah is watching both your private and public affairs

· Respecting the sacred limits of Allah (meaning one should not fear Allah to the extent they fear it will lead to despair, for your Lord is the Most Merciful)

How can we increase our fear for our Lord?

Fear of Allah, is obligatory for everyone, and no one can be guaranteed safety from Allah’s punishment except by fearing Him.

“so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers”

There are islamically prescribed means of attaining taqwa of our Lord, and deeds of the heart that lead to it:

· Reading Qur’an and reflecting on its meanings

· Reminding ourself the punishments of sinning

· Increase in moistening one’s tongue with dhikr

“The crying of the sinners is more loved to Allah than the tasbeeh of the arrogant.”

We’re so privileged, we pay £10 for a drink happily, £50 in a restaurant, tens of thousands on weddings etc but when it comes to giving charity, our hands tighten, suddenly that £10 looks too much, suddenly we’re broke and can’t afford it, suddenly it’s “I would if I could”
