Pakistan: Urgent call amid grave human rights concerns as two years pass since detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan

Two years after Imran Khan’s detention on 5 August 2023, concerns remain about the treatment of detainees, including the arbitrary denial of access to legal counsel and restrictions on visits by family members.

Supporters and leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have faced intensified targeting. In the past week, anti-terrorism courts convicted more than 100 PTI members, including senior figures, in relation to the 9 May 2023 protests. Earlier, 85 civilians were tried and convicted by military courts for the same protests. These proceedings raise serious concerns about due process and the right to a fair trial.

Severe restrictions continue to be imposed on PTI members and supporters’ rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association. Following nationwide protests this week, dozens of PTI supporters were unlawfully arrested, with many remaining detained.

IHRF calls on Pakistani authorities to respect the right to peaceful protest and to ensure due process for Imran Khan and PTI members and supporters, including access to public and fair hearings before competent, independent, and impartial courts. The use of military trials to try civilians must end, in line with Pakistan’s international human rights obligations.
