Thanks both @PeteSanders51 and @dmurphypsy for your continued opposition to the medicalisation of distress! I completely agree: The medicalisation of distress objectifies human experience; the violence of which then dictates against any genuinely caring empathic encounter.
@dmurphypsy @Glennademeter There is no training medical or otherwise that can possibly validate the unscientific, invalid, unreliable idiosyncratic system that is the medical model. Simply guessing at naming a set of committee-agreed symptoms does not create a disorder. Medicalisation is a con.
It was this that made us decide to join @pcp_uk.
The BACPs inability to reflect, to even pretend concern, let alone interest in the total collapse of member involvement, allied to ludicrously biased interpretation of data was shocking.
And a call to action.
Totally agree @sueprice101; another move towards medicalising distress and moving pathologising language into the everyday world of emotional experiencing. Doing so legitimises the medicalisation of distress and objectifies everyday emotional experiencing.
@aclientfirst Great work, Erin. I am old & tired as I have frequently said, so I’m very pleased that someone is carefully taking up the issues in a dignified and respectful way. You state your position very clearly. This is important, since you will, I am sure be misrepresented here and there>
SCoPEd proposals contain so much that is particularly antithetical to person-centred practice, and to humanistic therapy models in general, that it is scandalous that it is still being touted by BACP as the way forward in structuring counselling. Do they not know how to listen??
Therapists take fight for the heart and soul of #counselling & #psychotherapy to BACP via an AGM resolution against #SCoPEd - voting opens 19th August.
BACP members take unprecedented action to halt the #SCoPEd proposals, which are “damaging, do not reflect the realities of training and practice, and are based on flawed research”.
