Very sad to learn that Howard Berg passed away.
His decades-long work on chemotaxis is incredibly beautiful. He developed the elegant phenomenological theory and then tracked down the molecular mechanisms. His book "Random Walks in Biology" is a gem.
@haesleinhuepf I agree! It's so important to not only know what the code does but also what the coder's thought process was, and their opinion on how well it works... Especially for scientific code!
The "mince" part comes from minced (meaning chopped) fruit, and they are actually friendly little pieces of pastry, to be enjoyed while still so hot inside that you almost burn your mouth. 3/3
You know the British tradition of having mince pies in the approaching season? First time I someone told me about it I heard "minced pies" and thought of mashed and crushed pies (for my American friends, this has nothing to do with apples and everything to do with pub food). 1/3
A bit disturbed, my next thought was of mincemeat (aka minced beef) in a pie which was way less disturbing but also not very christmas-y. I remained in that state of ignorance for about five years until someone convinced me to try one. 2/3

@Susannajd I'm seriously awed by the detective work that has to have gone into this investigation at the CDC. This must be an extremely frustrating job, but ultimately very rewarding if you find the cause. A room spray - who would have thought of that??
@BlindMath@JoshuaABull @robjohnnoble @gammagirllab@ecmtb2022 I totally agree with you. It is much better to have the hybrid option, reducing travel when possible and allowing participation when in person attendance is not possible for one reason or another.
The first bread I made since July. Good to know that the sourdough starter survives freezing and thawing well. Although the bread now has a slightly nuttier flavour, I wonder if that has to do with freezing.
Applications now open for this fully funded interdisciplinary PhD project @univofstandrews:
