A cat named Sniff has a favorite place to hang out: an elementary school in Vancouver. His owner noticed something funny when she checked his GPS tracker. All summer, Sniff had avoided the school. “There are no kids, so he's not there,” she said.

Now that school's back, so is Sniff. He's back to visiting classrooms, attending assemblies, and hanging out with the students.

Until 1928, ships cats were exempt from the UK laws that mandated a 6-month quarantine for imported animals. When the government revoked this exemption, the Royal Navy contemplated banning cats to avoid the bureaucratic headaches. However, there were concerns that a ban could hinder recruitment because many men believed cats brought good luck and refused to sail without at least one on the ship. It was decided that sailors could keep their cats without quarantine as long as the cats remained confined while in port.

A group of travelers lost their dog in an avalanche, fearing she died in the natural disaster.

However, LouLou was just found 50 hours later almost completely uninjured, with only a broken toe and a chipped tooth. She was just hanging out in the snow.

[Furrend @hifurrend]

63 years ago today, Félicette became the first cat to travel to space and safely return. On October 18, 1963, she took off on a French rocket from the Algerian Sahara. Her flight lasted about 13 minutes, and she reached an altitude of over 150 kilometers.

Here's archival footage of her training, launch, and return to Earth.
