It’s deplorable to hear of the direct shooting and violence on the peaceful demonstrations in Pakistan, killing at least 15 civilians.
The Australian government needs to take action like the US Congress and impose visa bans and asset freezes on General Asim Munir and others involved in corruption and human rights abuses.

What is happening in #Pakistan is MASSIVE!
The tsunami of national support for the release of @Imran KhanPTI is quite simply incredible! The military-supported govt of @PmShabazShariff cannot ignore this genuine national popular movement.
The status quo will no longer work!
The massive crackdown and use of force to disperse protesters in Islamabad is a blatant violation of human rights and must be stopped immediately. All human rights organizations are closely monitoring this issue.
What planet is @CMShehbaz on? His country is on the brink of civil war, #Islamabad is under lockdown; he’s keeping @ImranKhanPTI illegally in prison; at least three people have been martyred during a peaceful protest & he’s tweeting like some village idiot about how happy clappy he is. #PakistanUnderFascism
You can’t keep crushing public sentiment and the public will. It’s an untenable policy. And with Pakistan increasingly resembling a train wreck in slow motion, it’s also irresponsible and dangerous. The current confrontation badly needs a political resolution.
I'm hearing of many concerning developments in #Pakistan.
Today, I addressed the issue of human rights in a statement to the Sindhi Foundation. Disappearances, forced conversions, and blasphemy laws have affected Pakistanis, and particularly Sindhis, for far too long. 1/3
Freedom of speech and the freedom to peacefully protest are essential to democracy – that holds true in the United States, in Pakistan, and around the globe.
I stand with pro-democracy advocates in Pakistan as they fight for justice and human rights.
The brutal repression of protesters in Pakistan and growing political violence is an attempt to suppress democracy and human rights.
I stand with the brave Pakistanis who are rising up and protesting for change.
Thousands of Pakistanis are protesting for democracy & are being met with violent repression. I am hearing reports that the government is using live fire & tear gas against protesters.
I condemn this violence & urge the government to allow these protests to continue peacefully.
I am moved by the bravery demonstrated by the Pakistani people as they protest for electoral integrity, and judicial fairness--and I condemn any violent suppression of them exercising their fundamental rights.
Everyone deserves to speak out and demand democracy.
I'm encouraged by every single voter in Pakistan — you made your voices heard.
Even amidst widespread vote tampering, which must be investigated.
As democracies are threatened — our own and those around the world — upholding the will of the people is more important than ever.
