Repeated head impacts in soccer remain a major concern because researchers still lack reliable ways to measure what the brain experiences during play.
To help close that gap, researchers evaluated an instrumented headband designed to measure head kinematics during soccer headers under real-world conditions, including throw-ins, goal-kicks, and corner-kicks.
The deviceโs measurements were compared against an instrumented mouthpiece that is widely used in head impact research. The headband showed fair-to-excellent agreement for several motion measurements, particularly angular velocity and translational acceleration, while also revealing areas where accuracy still needs improvement.
More reliable head impact measurement could improve how concussion risk is quantified in soccer and help strengthen the scientific foundation for future safety guidelines.
