ECOWAS COMMISSION CONVENES REGIONAL WORKSHOP TO ADDRESS THE IMPACT OF MISINFORMATION AND DISINFORMATION ON PEACE AND SECURITY IN WEST AFRICA
The ECOWAS Commission through its directorate of peace keeping and regional security, in collaboration with its Training Centres of Excellence (TCEs), Centre for Strategic Research and Studies (CSRS) and National Defence College (NDC), Abuja hold a two-day methodology workshop on the regional study titled “The impact of misinformation and disinformation on peace and security in West Africa” in Abuja, Nigeria from the 10th to 11th of June, 2026.
Over the course of the two-day event, distinguished scholars, national focal points, and technical experts will deliberate on key parameters including conceptual alignment, methodological harmonization, validation of research instruments, digital research tools, data protection and quality assurance.
The final empirical evidence gathered from this study will be used to identify emerging trends and deliver actionable, practical recommendations to reinforce security mechanisms and regional resilience across West Africa.
Global security takes center stage.
The National Coordinator, Maj Gen AG Laka, represented Nigeria at the Senior Officials Dialogue on Counter-Terrorism in #Madrid, #Spain — joining global leaders to confront the rising threat of terrorism across Africa.
From the Sahel to the Lake Chad Basin, the message was clear: no nation can tackle this threat alone.
Nigeria reaffirmed its leadership in driving intelligence sharing, regional cooperation, and bold, coordinated action against violent extremism.

The National Counter Terrorism Centre, under the Office of the National Security Adviser, in collaboration with Global Centre on Cooperative Security, commenced a pilot training on Countering Violent Extremism in custodial centres for the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The training is focused on strengthening capacity to prevent and counter violent extremism within custodial facilities through knowledge sharing, collaboration, and practical strategies.

AFRICAN UNION COMMISSION AND NIGERIA SIGN LANDMARK MOU TO COMBAT TERRORISM
The African Union Commission and the Federal Republic of Nigeria signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday, September 8, 2025, to enhance collaboration in combating terrorism and violent extremism across Africa.
The MoU, signed by Amb. Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and Major General Adamu Garba Laka, National Coordinator of Nigeria's National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), establishes a strategic framework to enhance cooperation and coordination between the AU and Nigeria on counterterrorism efforts.
"This partnership underscores the commitment of the African Union and Nigeria to addressing the growing threat of terrorism through coordinated strategies, capacity building, and information sharing," said Amb. Adeoye.
The MoU focuses on aligning NCTC initiatives with African Union counterterrorism efforts, including supporting regional initiatives and task forces. Key areas of cooperation include:
- Sharing information in real-time
- Seconding NCTC experts to the African Union Counter-terrorism Centre (AUCTC)
- Conducting joint research
- Supporting victim recovery, deradicalization, and reintegration efforts
A Joint Working Group will oversee the progress and implementation of the MoU.
This landmark agreement demonstrates the African Union's and Nigeria's commitment to ensuring peace and security across Africa.

On September 8, 2025, the African Union (AU) @_AfricanUnion Commission and Nigeria’s National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to enhance collaborative efforts in combating terrorism and violent extremism across Africa. Signed by H.E. Amb. Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and Major General AG LAKA, NCTC National Coordinator, the agreement establishes a strategic framework to align Nigeria’s counterterrorism policies with AU frameworks.
The MoU, effective immediately, will be implemented by the AU Counter-terrorism Centre (AUCTC) and NCTC, focusing on real-time information sharing, capacity building, joint research, and supporting victim recovery, deradicalization, and reintegration. It strengthens regional initiatives, including the Nouakchott Process, Accra Initiative, UFL-Sahel Joint Force, and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF). Amb. Adeoye praised Nigeria’s leadership in West Africa and the Sahel, while Maj Gen AG LAKA emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace, aligning with the Abuja Process Declaration of April 2024.
A Joint Working Group will oversee the MoU’s implementation. Nigeria remains dedicated to fostering peace and security across the continent.
