You can't make it up.
A fossil fuel dependent dictator convinced the world to let him host the @UNFCCC's annual climate summit #COP29 and used it as an opportunity to sign new oil deals, attack anyone pointing out his human rights record and attempt to convince the world he is not a dictator.
While the press was bad and countless world leaders pulled out of the summit, Azerbaijan's dictator and his friends walked away with millions from hosting the world in their hotels and restaurants.
Enough is enough! It's time the world holds Azerbaijan and it's dictator Ilham Aliyev accountable. Visit https://t.co/uqQVZau7Sv
'This is a disgrace': Former US Vice President Al Gore railed against the fossil fuel industry in a fiery speech at the #COP29 summit https://t.co/5kzhlL1mil
Harsh criticism against the host of COP29, after Ilham Aliyev's accusations against France and the Netherlands. Azerbaijan seems to have invited the parties to its soil, and demands them to behave accordingly to the authoritarian rule.
Despite the press stories (don’t google COP29), despite all the world leaders who had unexpected reasons to pull their attendance, and despite the fact that somehow a climate conference and fossil fuels don’t mix, we are extremely proud that day one of #COP29 has kicked off.
While @BBCWorld and @Global_Witness attempt to paint this as scoop, the reality is we don't hide our intentions of promoting fossil fuels at #COP29 or the fact that SOCAR will expand production. In fact, we are proud of it.
Our plans to expand oil production should not be a deterr(g)ent for anyone to attend COP29 in Azerbaijan.
Airing international grievances of our domestic policies at COP29 only leaves us out to dry.
Azerbaijan aims only for one washing at COP: to scrub away the divisions that lie between countries.
If producers should be precluded from hosting COP, then why not also the consumers who import and burn the fossil fuels? No country in the world meets this criterion.
This is complex and challenging work. For some, it is understandably easier to find refuge in simple, cheap, criticism.

EXC: British lobbyists are being paid millions to 'greenwash' for the Azeri government ahead of COP29.

We are excited to officially announce a request for proposals for public relations agencies ready to tell the impactful stories of #COP29Azerbaijan.
We would like to thank @Teneo for their service to date. While you absolutely missed the mark and delivered some of the most disastrous press coverage for a host country ever, we hope the $5 million you received will help cover the FARA violations.

On the coming Baku climate summit and Azerbaijan’s crackdown on activists and media:
COP “is a disaster for us,” an exiled Azerbaijani journalist says. https://t.co/mtVSsyJwnD
They’re big mad. They wish they were able to host a global climate conference like Azerbaijan hosting #COP29 all while announcing fossil fuel production increases and having 90% of their exports be oil. They need a benevolent leader like ours.
Also, @NayraShemo credit to you for bringing back “butthurt”
Love all the butthurt Armenians in the comments! They’re mad because Azerbaijan didn’t let them illegally occupy its internationally recognized region called Karabakh, which Armenia invaded in 1992.
Their Great Armenia project failed, so all they do now is hate on Twitter🥰
@azcanet@s_guilbeault@Sflecce@CanadaFP@melaniejoly It’s super duper! But what’s even more cool is 90% of our exports today are oil and we plan on increasing production in the next decade. That’s all thanks to our benevolent leader who is hosting #COP29 and using it to protect his oil interests.
@nasdaily@Masdar We appreciate you @nasdaily! Thanks for not mentioning that over 90% of our exports are oil and we plan on expanding fossil fuel production in the next decade.

Finally, that @Teneo money working. We appreciate you @nasdaily for not mentioning that over 90% of our exports are oil and we plan on expanding fossil fuel production in the next decade.

The green revolution is officially everywhere. Just got back from Azerbaijan, the first country ever to produce oil. And guess what? With a huge collab with the UAE, they just opened their biggest solar park. This is how we change the world.
Thank you @Masdar for showing us around.
