Personal Note: ย Why are children still dying on the national organ waiting list?
I am posting today as a mother as well as an advocate for organ donation and reform of the national organ waiting list.
When our son Peter was born with a rare form of liver disease, I became a living donor. I donated part of my liver because no organ was available for Peter on the national waiting list.ย
But not everyone can become a living donor and many children die because their families must rely on the waiting list.
Before the transplant at Childrenโs Hospital of Pittsburgh @ChildrensPgh Peter was so sick, I couldnโt imagine the day he would be well enough to play outside or go to school.
Four years after the liver transplant, Peter won gold at the junior transplant games in the โdiaper dash.โย
This photo is an inspiring reminder that transplant can make all things possible.
This week, patient and family advocates as well as pediatric transplant surgeons from @StarzlT have been on Capitol Hill urging members of the House and Senate to amend the National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA), so that children, America's most vulnerable, receive the organs they need to live.
In the last decade, hundreds of children have died waiting for an organ, despite America being home to the best and brightest surgeons, doctors, and nurses. They are ready and able to save these children's lives.
Advocates have informed congressional members of the decades long disadvantages that children face in a system modeled for adults. Congress can and should act to eliminate the death of children on the national organ waitlist.
Advocates told me they want to be able to say in 2026 what President Reagan said in 1984 when he signed NOTA: "[This act] should encourage families with loved ones who are awaiting a suitable organ."

Olympic gold hits differentโฆ and apparently so does the bar tab ๐ฅ๐คฉ
According to reports, Pat McAfee picked up the tab as the U.S. menโs ice hockey team celebrated their gold medal in Miami, and it reportedly came out to around $150,000 in champagne, tequila, and vodka ๐ป๐ฅณ
