What is the difference between Crypto Card issuers Rain and Wirex?
Two companies sit behind almost every Crypto Card on the market, and which one yours runs on quietly decides three things: the currency you spend, the type of card in your app, and who regulates the money behind it
@raincards is the dollar side. It issues through Nimbus LLC on a money transmitter licence out of Puerto Rico, and a single BIN sits under Etherfi, KAST, Tria, Plasma One, Avici, XPlace, Oobit, Jupiter, Hyperbeat, Lava, Peanut and the dollar Kolo card
- spend dollars and nothing converts, live on euros and every single purchase does
- its cards come out as credit, not debit, so hotel and rental holds see a credit card
- Europe is not on its live region list yet, and the licence is not an EU or UK one
- Rain ships no card of its own, so it never competes with the apps it issues for
@wirexapp is the euro side, and it is not one entity but two. Its own European card is issued by Transact Payments Malta under the MFSA, and the client cards, COCA and Pulsar Money, by Wirex Limited in London under the FCA
- euros stay euros. IBANs in EUR and GBP, SEPA Instant, limits written in euros too
- its cards come out as debit, and dollars are the ones that convert now
- a European or a British regulator sits behind it, with an address that answers
- Wirex sells the rails and then stands on the shelf next to its own clients with a card of its own
Cashback is on neither list, and that is the point. The issuer does not pay it. The app does, out of its own token, its points, or its own pocket. Pulsar hands out points and no cashback at all. Wirex One pays in dollars, but the tier that sets your rate is a position in $WPAY. Etherfi swallows the conversion itself: in my last rate test it charged $12.92 on a basket the market priced at $12.92, while Avici, sitting on the very same issuer, charged $13.07
So the issuer decides your currency, your licence, your BIN and whether the card is credit or debit. Everything you shop for, the cashback, the rate and the limits, is the app on top of it
Dollars, Rain. Euros, Wirex. And that second half has a shelf life: Rain took its Visa principal membership specifically to start issuing in Europe
Do you know which of the two your card sits on?
