@GovofCO On this day in Colorado history 116 years ago, our state's founders erected a monument honoring Union Civil War veterans at the State Capitol, an investment of nearly $2.5 million in today’s money. Since 1909, 25 different governors have overseen our state and have upkept the legacy and importance of this Monument. Under Governor Jared Polis this piece of our heritage was lost. Instead of restoring it after its destruction, his administration allowed it to remain down and promoted its replacement. As we approach Colorado’s 150th anniversary, we mourn the permanent loss of this historic landmark and the heritage it represented.

I was honored to meet with the group working to reconnect Colorado families with the memories of 80 Colorado soldiers buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten.
Since 1946, Dutch families have lovingly adopted the gravesites of thousands of American soldiers, visiting them, caring for their stories, and passing that responsibility from one generation to the next.

This project is a powerful reminder that service and sacrifice are never forgotten, and we hope to help find more descendants here in Colorado so these families across the ocean can be connected.

Why is The Sand Creek Massacre considered by History Colorado and @GovofCO as something that is absolutely necessary to be constantly promoted over literally any other good that happened in our history? Yes its important but most Coloradans in general have no connection or relation to it. For Colorado, being the centennial state, I have yet to see any good mentioned.

Polis will be remembered as the governor who destroyed Colorado history. As the US turns 250 and Colorado turns 150 in 2026, this year also marks the 148th anniversary of President Ulysses S. Grant gifting two Civil War cannons (Gettysburg veterans) to the Chaffee Light Artillery. These same cannons stood beside our vandalized Union Civil War statue since its 1907 dedication, the cannons helped defend Denver’s Chinese community during the 1880 anti-Chinese riots, and fired salutes at every Colorado governor’s inauguration from 1878 to 1930. For the first time in state history, they’ve now been hidden away for over 5 years. “Honoring” our past by burying these artifacts and distracting with otter reintroduction is classic whitewashing the kind seen in China during the Cultural Revolution.
