That’s an oversimplification. People can be awful to each other, inside & outside their own groups. Just look at some families.

Neuroscientists have found that we don’t have an inherent “us vs. them” mentality. The way we see in-group & out-group categories are not “hard-wired” but rather, highly flexible & can shift quickly & dynamically. (Think of military units in battle.)

Their research suggests humans apparently did not evolve an “us vs. them” antagonism. In fact, plenty shows “our capacity to have harmonious interdependent relationships that cross group boundaries is an important aspect of our species’ success.” 

However, group identity can & has been used (especially by politicians) to generate hatred/division, especially when there is an illusion of scarcity & a struggle for resources or perceived threat, which is why plenty of political psychologists emphasize the effectiveness of fear-driven rhetoric. (Look up YT videos featuring people like Mark McKinnon, political strategist for Bush & McCain.)

Some of the ways to combat this division is the ability to see each other as teammates that require intergroup cooperation to achieve a common goal. Are you familiar with the Robber’s Cave experiment? (See below video.)

The way I see it is, we need to find a way to blur those lines & work together towards making the world better for future generations by constantly improving our critical thinking skills (an ongoing process) & practicing empathy.

Democracy assumes equality, while capitalism ensures hierarchy. Their coexistence has always been an illusion. A democracy built on stolen land, unpaid labor, and global extraction was never democracy. It's just hierarchy with better branding.

Equality without equity is a myth we tell to quiet the oppressed.

Rumeysa Ozturk, 30-year-old female, Fulbright scholar in the process of obtaining a doctorate degree in Child Study and Human Development from Tufts University, Turkish citizen legally in the U.S. on an F-1 visa. A year ago, Ozturk co-authored an opinion piece published in the Tufts student newspaper that criticized the university’s response to student efforts demanding the school disclose and sever its relationships with companies that held ties to Israel. Jennifer Ruth Hoyden, a doctoral student in New York who's known Ozturk since 2019, described her friend as a compassionate, soft-spoken and gentle person who is devoted to working with children. Yunseo Chung, 21-year-old female, Korean-American Columbia student and lawful permanent resident of the US who has lived in the US since she was seven. She was valedictorian at her high school. Chung was one of the several students arrested for participating in a pro-Palestine protest on March 5 this year at Barnard College, a Columbia-affiliated undergraduate college. During a hearing in Manhattan, U.S. District Judge Naomi Buchwald said "nothing in the record" suggested Chung posed a threat to the community, a "foreign-policy risk," or had any contact with terrorist organizations.

Ranjani Srinivasan, 37-year-old female, 5th year PhD student and doctoral candidate in Urban Planning at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP). Indian citizen legally in the U.S. on an F-1 visa until it was revoked, after which she left the U.S. for Canada before ICE could pick her up. She has said, "I am someone who supports the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. Not that I have been vocal about this opinion of mine. I just liked tweets or signed petitions that challenged academic repression and which said that the violence (in the Middle East) needs to stop. I don’t think that this makes me a terrorist sympathiser. Such branding is a common tactic to stifle any sort of talk on human rights."

Momodou Taal, 30-year-old male, doctoral student in Africana studies at Cornell University and dual citizen of the United Kingdom and The Gambia. He participated in pro-Palestine protests last year, where he called on Cornell to divest from companies that sell weapons to Israel. On CNN, Taal said he’s against all killing of civilians and that he felt it was racist to have to condemn a terrorist organization every time before criticizing Israel. 

Alireza Doroudi, 32-year-old male, mechanical engineering doctoral student at the University of Alabama, Iranian citizen. He lived with his fiance, who has set up a GoFundMe to deal with legal expenses. He has not been charged with any crime, and Doroudi’s only known offense while in America was for speeding in Tuscaloosa County two years ago. His lawyer David Rozas told @AP, "With the words of his fiancé, he is a nerd. All he does is study and is literally trying to fulfill his dream, the American dream, of becoming a researcher and professor of mechanical engineering."
