Yes, we should defend the occupations with everything we have.
But remember: all is not lost if they end.
The test of their efficacy is whether they have set down roots for something bigger, longer lasting, and even more difficult to dislodge.
Following from this, while the occupations will not last forever, the connections made within the mass movement galvanized around them can be made durable (between students, campus workers, staff, faculty, and local residents).
These connections generate new points of leverage.
One important lesson is that physical occupations are just one tactic that should be incorporated into a strategy aimed at bringing in ever greater circles within the university and ultimately, beyond it.
In this way, mass democratic assemblies are critical feature.
In 2009 a wave of campus occupations swept across Calfiornia's public university systems.
Some of the key tactical lessons from that time remain relevant for this moment, as do important lessons about strategic limitations. 🧵

Maher Terminal in Elizabeth, NJ was greeted by a pro-Palestine caravan led by Port Workers for Peace early today to call attention to Israeli shipping company ZIM, which docks there.
The caravan took police by surprise, who mobilized ESU, a drone, and motorcycles after it ended.
