The US and China both operate a free market economy. Let’s call this Commerce. Commerce existed for millennia.

The US favours Capitalism on top of Commerce. This lets powerful companies to bend Commerce in their favour. Ordinary traders are disadvantaged and the State is subordinate to powerful structures.

China favours Communism for global control, where even powerful companies have to play by the rules of Commerce, and the State has the power to punish unfair capitalist market behaviour.

A free market economy is stifled by capitalism, but flourishes in communism.
