I discovered some months ago that my tailor had pivoted from kaftans to bespoke denim, supplying fashion houses and producing for private clients. He still makes great kaftans for old customers like me, but denim is now their bread & butter.

I asked him why, especially because he made great kaftans, had many high-profile clients, and was making really good money.

He said the kaftan market had become extremely competitive and margins were getting tighter. With denim, he could create more differentiated pieces and charge two or three times more because the market was still relatively novel.

Interestingly, none of this started with some grand strategy. He made one denim piece for a customer, posted it, people loved it, so he made more. Demand kept growing, and he followed it. Today, he has a showroom and warehouse full of bespoke denim: jeans, gowns, jackets, trousers, you name it.

There is a big business lesson here.

Your next business model may be hiding inside something you're already doing. A customer request. A side product. An experiment. Something that unexpectedly sells better or carries better margins than your core offering.

Pay attention to those signals.
This was exactly how So Fresh pivoted from selling fruits and vegetables to serving fresh, delicious meals. We listened to what the market was telling us and moved.

Don't just look at what sells today. Look at what customers are increasingly willing to pay for, where margins are better, where competition is weaker, where your existing capabilities give you an advantage, and what customer and industry trends are telling you.

Businesses are not meant to remain exactly as they started. Markets change, customer preferences change, the competitive landscape changes, and new opportunities open up.

Your job is to keep paying attention and be willing to move when the evidence tells you to.
