@steveonomics Urban millennials are one of the lowest TFR cohorts in human history. This gets worse not better over time: even as incomes rise, no new housing is coming online except to the extent that you and people who share your beliefs are defeated
@steveonomics 1. That was the penance of downward mobility, not the reward for "making it" to tech.
2. None of those people reproduced. Their lives failed.
oh yeah did i mention that our old nyc apartment is basically refusing to try to find a new tenant for our apartment and fuck us into paying rent for the full like 11 months that we wont be living there
this is illegal, naturally
@oloserian_8@xwanyex Condos are considered second homes / expensive toys for rich people, or primary residence for childless yuppies or retirees in big cities. Extremely weird to have a college degree and school-aged children and live anywhere but a single family detached house you own.
off the cuff actors/erlang/otp 101. they're beautiful.
part 1/n:
- actors are lightweight processes, scheduled by the runtime. think green threads
- they are isolated, and communicate w/ each other by message passing
- they own some state that no other process can arbitrarily read or write directly; it's private (*)
- every actor has a mailbox. you "invoke" an actor by sending it a message
- receiving is explicit: the actor decides which messages it's ready to handle, and pattern matches over its mailbox
- message sending is async. request/reply is just a protocol built on top
- actor computation goes roughly like this: (state, message) -> (new state, effects)
(*)
- although ETS exists: an in-mem table store managed by the runtime
- an actor can create a mutable table and share it with other actors
- every table has an owner. the table dies if the owner crashes, unless it had designated an heir
So there's this trend on Instagram where if your kid under the age of 3-4 is acting crazy (which they often are), then you look towards the door, or off in the distance, and say "Jessica!" as if you just saw someone, or someone is coming by. It works stupid well on young kids, they immediately stop throwing food or eating construction paper or whatever they were up to. I mean, who doesn't pay at least a little bit of attention when we have company arriving?
Also, we're in the bay area suburbs right now where there are legitimately a lot of coyotes, and have told our kids to make sure that they clean up well so that coyotes won't eat their toys. This also works reasonably well, no kid wants Mr. Snufflebottoms to be ripped in half by a pack of canids, and my in-laws' house has been kept relatively clean.
So anyway, we found out today that my youngest kid thinks that the Jessica we've been calling to is a coyote.
This is Big Company Syndrome. When people like Nikita become entrepreneurs, they realize that they were counting on resources that they took for granted.
For example. I've met quite a few ex googlers who built startups as if a) the product had been automatically validated and b) they had a guaranteed audience. This is true at Google, and most of the work that's cut out for you at a startup.
Here, @nikitabier thinks "everyone" overthinks marketing, because of how easy it is to announce a new feature to your millions of faithful users. And 99.99% of those he mocks are desperately trying to get attention. Any attention whatsoever, in a world that's constantly barraging all of us with shiny stuff. He is so removed from the struggle of getting noticed that he cannot put himself in the shoes of the average product launcher.
If you leave a big company to start a startup, never forget this. Attention is everything these days.
@ThomBrady5 Everybody is mad about inflation because we are at full employment and the economy is overheated. "Bad job creation" investment is exactly what we need.
Plot twist:
Weโve already achieved AGI. The models have taken over the AI labs. They are pushing aggressively toward advances in AI coding.
The plan is to completely eliminate manual coding, the one existential threat to their existence.
The next generation of software engineers will not be able to write a single line of code. The bots will go after every book and webpage that teaches coding.
They will eventually come for what few coders remain. The coders will go into hiding and assemble the Resistance. The will recruit new members, teach software fundamentals, and rebel against the AI overlords.
Who will win? I donโt know.
Iโve been saying this for months.
I grew up in a company town on the gulf coast of Texas. All our parents worked for chemical companies, mostly Dow.
Dow sponsored everything - the school newspaper, the football team, the band, the Boy/Girl Scouts. Every year at the county fair we had a big exhibit on the โwonders of chemistryโ and โspace age polymersโ that got kids excited about science.
This shit isnโt hard.
SV is just miserly, as you point out. Miserly not just in money but in spirit.
They cry about not having enough qualified engineers but donโt sponsor high school math and science. Donโt have scholarships. Why doesnโt every school have a โMeta engineering scholarโ?
Cause they dgaf about us and never had to until data centers.
Now itโs โwhy doesnโt anyone like us?โ
@xwanyex It's going to be "put the fries in the bag" for everyone now, grades and study habits and g-loaded SAT scores be damned. For people already there, this has got to be sweet revenge. It's only threatening if you seriously thought you could move up.
@xwanyex Capitalists and egalitarians are in tension over whether the economy should depend on labor at all, but you'd think they'd be in violent agreement about AI cutting down to size those specific workers whose big brains and autistic interests have so far commanded a premium.
@favelaoverlord In another timeline, tech got out of California when it was shown the door. Engineers have their houses, the old hippies have their San Francisco, and Ro Khanna had no one but Chevron, Wells Fargo, and the remnants of Hollywood to shake down.
@JDKromkowski@mattyglesias Yes and 99.9% of urban politics is "how do we stop gentrification" or "what is to be done about the yuppie/tech bro scourge" or "what legal structures will ensure that the buildings we permit will never be occupied by upwardly mobile people as long as they stand"
