software engineering has this curse where you start from a simple problem and 6 months later you find yourself at 3 am playing with docker containers and encoded polyline geo traces and you’re like how the fuck did i get there
ladies and gentlemen please check your testflights
(if you had an app installed, today you’re getting a big update, featuring… you know what, no, i won’t spoil it for you)
pls send your thoughts and excitement and screenshots our way!
with this rework, our background path tracing should be good enough that it “just works” 90% the time without you having to think about it.
be ready to see some crazy ideas built on top of that data, as we try different ways to help you explore & get inspired :)
soon!
we’re in the process of wrapping up @untitledmapapp’s next release – it has been a while but we needed to rework some foundations to iterate faster on what we want to build on top.
here’s a before/after:
@queromasnquero incredible to see you come up with this! beautiful on every level & exactly how map apps (and our software in general) should work :) elegantly combine different data “dimensions” to make magic slightly more possible
somewhat related:
imagine if your navigation app could give you slightly different directions:
instead of optimizing for speed, it would walk you through streets that you never (or rarely) been through
making your bike commute, or your walk through the downtown, new!
UNTITLED MAP APP. soon!
it has been brought to my attention that when you say "Testflight" 100 times in your tweets, emails, and elsewhere, people naturally begin to assume that @untitledmapapp will be available on iOS only
luckily, we want to be everywhere, so Android would be the very next thing!!
lots of cool challenges behind this one, including geometry computations, splitting work in another thread to not slow down the UI, iterative GPS trace crawling that can survive app crashes and phone shutdowns... maybe we need to start an uma engineering blog?
over the last weeks we've entirely rewritten the code for tracing your path in the fog, to make it automated, smooth as butter, and unlock future features
coming to an @untitledmapapp near you very soon!
to answer the most popular question in DMs over here🚨
- new testflight invites will go out when Gabe wraps up the new build
- after shipping = more invites
- it’s the good old “first come first serve”
- but if you’re really impatient, 💫we accept apple pay starting monday💫
