'FOUR AT THE FRONT'

I was pressed and squeezed into the front seat of a car. What should have been a 1-hour drive felt like 5 hours by the end.

So here’s what happened.
In April 2025, I was travelling from Sokoto to Koko in the Koko/Besse Local Government Area of Kebbi State. When I got to the park in Sokoto, there was no available car going to Koko. The only available car was going to Jega, and I was already late. My colleagues were waiting for me in Koko, so I hopped in. Sokoto to Jega is a 2-3 hour drive. We left the park a few minutes past 8am.

When we got to Jega it was past 10am, and I was in a hurry to get a car as soon as possible. I was lucky to find a car by the road, going to Koko. The driver said he was waiting for one more passenger before he could leave. I entered and sat in the front seat, with the other passenger. It was a Toyota Corolla "fish eye" — a 2-door car.

But before we started the journey proper, the driver stopped at a filling station to refuel. That’s where my miserable 1-hour journey began.

A man came from nowhere and spoke with the driver. Then he left, pointing toward the exit gate of the station. I didn’t pay much attention because I was on my phone. When we drove to the gate, the driver got down, and another person entered the car. The driver got in too.

I was shocked. I had seen four people in the front seat of a commercial car before, but I never imagined I’d be in that situation. I started complaining, but nobody supported me. I was alone, and I was late. Should I get down and wait for the next available car? How long would I have to wait before I got another one? So many questions were going through my head. But in the end, the only option was to continue the journey.

The man sat down. One leg was on the passenger’s side, making it five legs in total. The other leg was on the driver’s side, and the gear was between his legs — very close to his 'iyalilo'

20 minutes into the journey and I couldn’t feel my legs.
By the time we got to Koko, my legs were numb, and my patience was completely finished. I staggered out of the car like someone who had just survived a fight.

Four persons in the front seat of a car is a normal thing in this part of the country.
