As the COP29 climate meeting is reaching its end, it should not come as a surprise that yet another COP is failing. The current draft is a complete disaster. But even if our expectations are close to non-existent, we must never ever find ourselves reacting to these continuous betrayals with anything but rage.
The people in power are yet again about to agree to a death sentence to the countless people whose lives have been or will be ruined by the climate crisis. The current text is full of false solutions and empty promises. The money from the Global North countries needed to pay back their climate debt is still nowhere to be seen. The host country - Azerbaijan - is a repressive and authoritarian petro-state that has committed ethnic cleansing and genocidal acts towards Armenians. Civil society present at COP29 are being silenced, yet continue fighting and pushing negotiators towards the bare minimum.
All this while oppression, inequalities, wars and genocides all over the world continue to intensify. Those in power are worsening the destabilisation and destruction of our life supporting ecosystems. We are on track to experience the hottest year ever recorded, with the global greenhouse gases reaching an all time high just last year.
It is clear that our current systems are not working in our favour. The COP processes aren’t just failing us, they are part of a larger system built on injustice and designed to sacrifice current and future generations for the opportunity of a few to keep making unimaginable profits and continue to exploit planet and people.
With every negotiation, with every speech made by a world leader and with every agreement they sign, it becomes clear that it is up to us as a global collective to take the action we so desperately need and show where the leadership truly lies. They are not going to do it for us, as this COP29 yet again proves.

Activists are #holdingtheline ahead of the 8pm plenary in #Baku There are folks who haven’t gone home in 24 hours. They are standing tall and bold because they know the decisions made in these halls is going to adversely affect our communities back home #COP29
Mobilising the $1 trillion needed for #ClimateFinance requires all generations working together.

A friend of mine is stuck in Gaza with his sisters and they’re trying to evacuate to Egypt, but the cost of exit permits is extremely high (€10,000 per person). If you could donate any amount it would be deeply appreciated.

8 years ago the mainstream response to the Paris Agreement was joyous celebration at the "signal" it sent. 8 years later, the climate crisis is worse than expected, and the plan to get us out of the fossil fuel-filled hole remains to keep digging and bury the poor #COP28 ⬇️
#COP28 has adopted the GST, which is shockingly unfit for purpose. Littered with loopholes and weak wording, this symbolises a failure at yet another COP. Small Island Developing States were not present for the approval and Samoa received a standing ovation for raising this.
The #COP28#GlobalStocktake text was gaveled through without any comments allowed from Parties. The text is severely lacking in assurances for climate finance, and equity - indications that developed countries must take the lead - is almost entirely missing.
The Small Island Developing States were not even in the room when the GST #COP28 decision was adopted. Sadly we have seen decisions adopted in similar circumstances - Cancun, Durban, Doha and Paris just off the top of my head.
📣 Today was the #GlobalDayOfAction — a moment when people across the world marched for climate justice and human rights.
At #COP28, the climate justice movement came together in a powerful display of solidarity to call for a #CeasefireNow.

It irks me to no end that we can't talk about issues like this without many downplaying the genocide in Gaza. I think all genocides are bad, that should not be controversial position. The Holocaust was horrific. Never again *to anyone*.
In COP28 at an event in the German pavilion where a Ugandan activist was asked to take off a keffiyeh and told to speak last (after the white people) because they were worried she would speak on Palestine. Nothing says you’ve healed from your Nazism like silencing an African.
