Today, in the company of members of the National Working Committee and other NDC officials, it was a pleasure to receive and welcome respected elderstatesman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir Lawal, to the
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

In my remarks, I thanked him, on behalf of the National Chairman and members of the National Working Committee, for believing in our party.

I requested him to provide leadership and support in coordinating, guiding and strengthening the party in the North-East and the North Central Zone, as well as provide leadership and support for all our candidates, counting on his experience, leadership and extensive network to further strengthen the party.

Once again I warmly welcome Engr. Babachir Lawal to the NDC and look forward to working with him and other committed Nigerians as we continue to strengthen our party and advance the cause of multiparty democracy and good governance in our country.

During the North West Town Hall meeting today in Katsina, I responded to the claim made by the Minister of the FCT, HE Nyesom Wike that the president gave Oyo State N50 billion to upgrade the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan. I stated that the claim is false. The Ibadan airport upgrade is being fully funded by the Oyo State Government.

During my interview last night with the former senate president, Anyim Pius Anyim, the crucial question emerged: when politicians say it’s the south’s turn, which south are they talking about?

He talked about "the south's turn" and I challenged him to tell us: which south?

Because Nigeria’s south is not one political bloc. Obasanjo came from the south-west and had eight years. Tinubu, also from the south-west, is now being asked to take another eight.

So where, exactly, does this “south’s turn” leave the south-east? If “south” has effectively become shorthand for “south-west,” let’s have the honesty to say so.

And if Atiku can run in 2027 despite the supposedly sacred “south’s turn,” then perhaps we should stop pretending this is an equity argument. It’s a free-for-all.

Let every region produce its candidate. Let Nigerians decide. But please, let’s stop calling political preference “zoning” and selling it to Nigerians as equity.

Now, pour forth the torrent and set off a firestorm!

It is often said that the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.

Back in 2016 and 2017, the 8th Senate, under my leadership, rejected Ibrahim Magu’s nomination as substantive EFCC Chairman not once but twice. Still, he remained in office illegally until July 2020, without confirmation by the Senate.

At the time, some called our decision political. It wasn’t. We were simply exercising our constitutional duty and standing by what was right. My colleagues in the 8th Senate and I, as well as our families and associates, endured what I can only describe as attempts by Magu to terrorise us. Doing what was right came at a huge personal and public cost.

Yesterday, the Court of Appeal ruled that Magu’s prolonged tenure as acting EFCC Chairman was indeed unlawful.

Nearly a decade later, I feel vindicated yet again.

For those of us who have had the privilege of serving this nation, the deepest lesson in all of this is that time may test one’s conviction, but it always ultimately reveals the value of standing on principle.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE: NIGERIA REQUIRES MORE THAN THE END OF CONFLICT

As the world observes the International Day of Peace, Nigeria must acknowledge a difficult truth: enduring peace cannot be achieved while citizens continue to face insecurity, hunger, poverty, and despair.

Peace means more than the absence of violence. It exists when farmers can travel safely to and from their fields, children can attend school without the threat of abduction, families can afford adequate food, and young people can envision a future in their own country.

For this reason, peace must be grounded in effective governance. Governments must safeguard lives, ensure justice, combat corruption, invest in education and healthcare, expand productive opportunities, and manage national resources responsibly.

We cannot continue addressing only the visible effects of insecurity while neglecting the circumstances that generate desperation and instability.

Every naira misused represents a lost opportunity to strengthen peace. Every citizen left without support reflects a crisis overlooked. Every injustice committed erodes the foundations of peace.

Nigeria possesses the resources necessary to become a secure, peaceful, and prosperous nation. What is required is leadership, accountability, and the political will to place the Nigerian people at the centre of governance.

On this International Day of Peace, let us pledge to build a Nigeria in which justice is upheld, lives are protected, opportunities are expanded, and every citizen can live with dignity and hope.

Responsible governance is the foundation of peace.
