What is Delimitation?

Delimitation means redrawing Lok Sabha seats based on population… more population = more MPs. India has been using 1971 data till now.

Why is it a debate?
States like UP, Bihar, Rajasthan saw higher population growth, while southern states controlled it better. If updated purely on population:
• North gets more seats
• South’s share may slightly reduce (even if total seats increase)

Pros:
• Fair representation (1 person = 1 vote)
• Reflects current population
• Updates an outdated system

Cons:
• States that controlled population may feel penalized
• Political power may shift towards a few large states
• Concerns about regional balance and federal fairness

Political angle:
Winning a few big states already gives a strong advantage. Delimitation may increase that effect, which is why opposition parties are concerned.

This debate is not just about seats… it’s about balancing population, performance, and fairness in India’s democracy.
