I think you're describing PoW (proof of work) for transaction validation. PoS (proof of stake) is much more energy friendly, and it is already a thing 🙂.

@lehtimaeki If decentralisation of money is pointless then Bitcoin is pointless too 🙂. ETH 2.0 transactions work different, much more energy friendly. The whole tech around it is evolving, imo it's early to label it as pointless.
