Hippocampus generates an internal model of Euclidean space based on a generative grammar. @usmanfarooq201 and I asked how much of the internal model and grammar are a priori (Nature) and what is contributed by postnatal geometric experience (Nurture): https://t.co/hhIZlKPGGs 1/5
Hippocampus generates an internal model of Euclidean space. We ventured in a spatial odyssey exploring how much of the internal model is a priori, innate (Nature) and what is contributed by postnatal experience of Euclidean geometry (Nurture)

The songs of singing mice can help give new insight into the #evolution of vocal communication systems in mammals. ($) https://t.co/b9j7eMVp52 #neuroscience
Story: 1. Neurons in the brain are very chatty: they fire action potentials, their basic unit of communication, even when there is nothing to communicate. For example in this video, in visual cortex recordings in complete darkness. Lots of chatting:
Not for nothing - neural coding is a core underlying concept behind 7 Nobel Prizes by my count (Adrian, 1932; Hess, 1949; von Békésy, 1961; Hartline, 1967; Hubel & Wiesel, 1981; Axel & Buck, 2004; O'Keefe & the Mosers, 2014). Adrian's was literally for the idea of rate codes.
More generally: tasks for which humans consciously set the rules, instead of inheriting the laws of the universe, are often easier to automate. This is why I'm less excited about automating games, versus say, vision, language, & locomotion. https://t.co/DD4OASe2vC
Excited to share our recent work published in @sciencemagazine on the development of hippocampal neuronal sequences involved in memory formation/consolidation!
