A young Tamil musician, Ganesh Kumar Sankeethan (24) from Udayanagar-West, Kilinochchi was ordered to be remanded by Chavakachcheri Magistrate today, after he was arrested under PTA by Kilinochchi police on Tuesday (2) accusing him of performing a song in memory of war dead.
17 years ago, Sri Lanka carried out a genocidal campaign against the Tamil people. Tens of thousands killed. Hospitals destroyed. Families starved.
I will continue to stand with the Tamil community in the fight for justice. We need genocide recognition, universal jurisdiction, & international accountability.
Revelations suggest Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad allegedly provided $1M toward J.R. Jayewardene’s election campaign yet Tamil movements had long pointed to this connection. What was once dismissed is now being brought into the light.
There is no freedom of expression in our own homeland. No freedom even to remember. In many universities, speaking about the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle is silenced. Yet those who preach free speech travel abroad to defend it elsewhere.
Today I was prevented by @police from observing hearings at special trial at bar (open court) on #EasterAttacks. Police said its on order of judges, but refused to show such an order. Also said media can only cover if they posses a "media ID" & that national ID is not sufficient

🚨 BREAKING - Sri Lankan police attack and arrest Tamils protesting the illegally constructed Buddhist temple in Thaiyiddy, Jaffna.
Amongst those arrested were prominent civil society activist Velan Swamigal and Valikamam East District Council Chairman Thiyagaraja Nirosh.
More on this story to follow.
A banner in Jaffna pays tribute to officers who sacrificed their lives for others. When Tamils call for accountability for atrocities, it does not demonise every soldier. Calling for justice does not diminish the sacrifice of those who served with integrity, past or present.
Yet in Jaffna-Mayiliddy, more than 20 police officers were deployed to suppress a peaceful protest against an illegal vihara — a protest of just 10 people. Now do you see what this country prioritises? Where its resources are being used?
Across the country, disasters have taken hundreds of lives. Even now, rescue operations continue — someone trapped beneath the mud may still be waiting, hoping to be saved. The country is operating under emergency regulations. (1)
