Slack was supposed to be a video game.

Stewart Butterfield raised millions to build an online game called Glitch. Big vision, years of work, real money behind it. It flopped and shut down.

But while building it, the team had made a small internal tool just to talk to each other. That throwaway became Slack, later sold to Salesforce for $27.7 billion.

Here's the wild part. This was the second time it happened to him.

Years earlier another failed game he was building accidentally produced Flickr. Twice, the thing he set out to build died, and the byproduct became the company.

Conviction gets you to the starting line. But the willingness to abandon your own plan when reality disagrees is what actually builds the company.

Kennan launched it as "The First AI Admaker," backed by Founders Fund, a $12M domain, the whole bet on AI making ads.

When the data came back and AI wasn't converting, he didn't dig in to protect the story. He relaunched as "The Human Admaker," the literal opposite, and left the original launch linked in his own footer.

Bet big, watch it fail in public, and have the stomach to become the opposite of what you announced.

The pivot was never the embarrassing part. It's the whole skill.
