Wetlands may often be overlooked, but they are essential to life.
They are among nature’s most powerful systems. Wetlands store water during droughts, absorb floods, and filter pollution, helping provide clean drinking water and support crops and livelihoods.
This #WorldWetlandsDay, let us honour the traditional knowledge and cultural heritage that have protected wetlands for generations.

A KMFRI study has attributed wild fish kills in Lake Victoria to eutrophication and pollution, highlighting growing environmental pressures on freshwater ecosystems. The findings, published in the KMFRI Kenya Aquatica Journal (2025), underscore the need for sustainable, science-based interventions.
The research scientists recommend integrated watershed management as a critical solution to safeguard fisheries resources and protect local livelihoods that depend on the lake.
Join Dr. Christopher Aura, Director of Freshwater Systems at KMFRI, as he delves into the study’s key findings and their implications for fisheries management and ecosystem health.
