Rory McIlroy shares one of his favorite mantras and mindsets.
"One of the things that I love is focusing on the process over the prize."
"I would say to myself a lot: 'Process over prize. Process over prize. Process over prize.'"
"Just to take myself away from the outcome."
Own the process and focus on what you can control.
Then he mentions what happens to all of us:
"I can get real caught up in the outcome. I just really need to remind myself that the outcome will ultimately happen if you just focus on the process. It takes care of itself."
Everyone loves outcomes, very few love the process.
It means focus, discipline, consistency, and relentless commitment.
It doesn't matter what you want, it matters what you are willing to consistently do.

The older I get, the more I realize just how much being easy to be around matters. Talent often gets you in the room, your energy decides if you stay. People want to work with folks who are steady, calm, and simple to deal with... not the ones who make everything harder.
The cheat code nobody talks about: Being reliable. Answer emails quickly. Show up on time. Do what you said. Keep small promises. Remember details. In a world where everyone is flaky, reliability looks like genius. It's not talent.
Two players walk into every season.
Player 1 has out-of-this-world, God-given ability… but a weak mindset. When things go wrong, confidence disappears. Pressure feels heavy. The game becomes stressful.
Player 2 has pretty good natural talent, nowhere near Player 1, but has an elite mindset. They control the controllables, welcome adversity, and see pressure as fuel. Their confidence is built from their daily disciplines.
I always ask athletes: Which player ends up with more confidence? More fun? A more rewarding and successful career on and off the field? The answer is obvious.
Talent might open the door. Mindset is what keeps it open. And the best part? Mindset is trainable. Bring it on.
Leadership doesn't require anyone's permission. All it requires is your initiative. It's about your actions and attitude. Your skills and systems. And anyone can step up. Here's how:
What is the difference between Coachable and Uncoachable players?
Coachable Players:
- Seek feedback
- Accept coaching
- Ask questions
Uncoachable Players
- Know it all already
- Always have an excuse
- Get defensive
Be Coachable.
In hierarchy: be loyal upward, protective downward, and neutral sideways. Never reciprocate arrogance. Never gossip. Deliver beyond expectation and let your political behavior signal maturity. Character is armor; it outlasts talent, charm, and luck.
