“Mama Zhanna” - that’s how everyone who knew her called my mother. Everyone with whom she shared the warmth of her big heart and her incredibly beautiful soul.

Mom passed away 26 years ago - she was only 49… But the pain has remained. It never fully goes away…

It changes. Over the years, it gives way to a quiet gratitude for the unconditional love Mom gave. For the warmth and every happy moment we had together.

Mom never raised her voice at me. She didn’t scold, didn’t lecture, didn’t turn away because of her own worries or troubles. She talked a lot, hugged me, supported me, and simply loved me.

I was a happy child because I always felt her care - in her eyes, her smile, her hugs. When she would take me by the hand to school. Through the delicious meals she cooked (she was an amazing cook!), through the clothes and sweets she brought me from Poland in those difficult 90s (back then many people did that).

I remember once, when I was about 12 or 13, our class went on a trip to Poland. I spent all the money I had not on myself, but to buy a blouse and gifts for my mother - I really wanted to bring her something nice. She loved beautiful clothes and was always stylish. She was a very beautiful woman…

Beautiful not only on the outside, but on the inside too. She knew about the joys and struggles of her students (she was a teacher), cared deeply about their lives, and loved each of them not for their grades or behaviour, but simply… simply loved children.

I remember how she would meet her former students years later, ask about their lives, and always be ready to help if needed. It brought her joy.

Thank you, my dear, for life, for love, for everything.

Take care of your mothers. Call them every day, tell them you love them, visit as often as you can.

Happy Mother’s Day to all women in Ukraine who carry the most important title in the world.

And special respect to the Mothers of fallen Heroes. To those whose hearts carry the pain of the greatest loss, yet remain strong and dignified. We remember and bow to you with deep gratitude…
