A NYT reporter did a deep dive into the stats and found a ton of data suggesting the opposite.

Here are 7 stats that show reading is surviving and maybe even thriving:

1) In 2001, the average American adult read 14.5 books. By 2025, that number actually increased to 14.6 books.

2) In 2003, Americans ages 15 to 24 read 8.4 minutes a day. In 2022, they read more, 11.7 minutes a day.

3) In 2003, adults ages 25 to 34 read 9.6 minutes a day. In 2025, they also read more, 10.2 minutes a day.

4) In 2002, the National Endowment for the Arts survey found that 56.6% of American adults had read or listened to a book in the previous year. 20 years later, in 2022, that number fell by just 1% to 55.6%.

5) Book sales are near record highs. More books are sold annually these days than a decade ago.

6) The number of independent bookstores in the US grew by 70% from 2020 to 2025. Barnes & Noble opened 50 new locations in 2024.

7) Readers borrowed 10% more books from libraries in 2025 than in 2024.

In 2024 New York instituted a new law that, per the NYPost, "classifies rape as nonconsensual or forcibly compelled sexual intercourse, oral sexual conduct or anal sexual conduct after previously defining rape as only nonconsensual or forcibly compelled vaginal penetration by a penis."

So... New York (rightly!) expanded the definition of what counts as rape. More survivors (thankfully!) came forward. As a result, official rates of rape increased. So Mamdani was... right and everyone is just yelling about this in bad faith?
