Sounds good in principle. The realistic challenge, however, is that building an international airport isn’t like relocating a residential or office project to another site. If an alternate location is chosen today, the entire process begins from scratch—site feasibility studies, environmental and social impact assessments, land acquisition, approvals from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, AAI, DGCA, Defence, IMD, forest/wildlife authorities (where applicable), CRZ clearance (if applicable), utility shifting, detailed design, tendering and construction.

Even in the absolute best-case scenario—with no protests, litigation or delays—it would take at least 7 years just to reach where Parandur stands today. After that comes the actual construction and commissioning, making 2040 a realistic timeline for the first flight.

In contrast, if Parandur proceeds without interruption, Chennai could realistically see operations around 2031. That’s nearly a decade of lost opportunity. By then, Chennai could slip further behind not only Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, but also cities like Pune, Ahmedabad and Kochi in aviation infrastructure and connectivity.

Infrastructure decisions should account for these timelines, because every restart comes with a significant cost in time and competitiveness.
